Christopher Deas, Italian Wine Merchants: "This is a generous, silky textured Reserva Ardanza and one of the most exciting debuts we have tasted since its birth in 1942. The estate has been able to use the fruit from their new Garnacha vineyards in the village of Tudelilla (Rioja Baja), La Pedriza, which represents 20% of the blend complementing the majority of Tempranillo. As a result, there is more substantial fruit feel, more freshness, and less dill. The massively explosive nose pulls you in with cherry liquor, wild berries and sandalwood. On the palate this is a creamy mouthful of expansive old vine Garnacha and Tempranillo fruit that remains incredibly light on its feet – WEIGHTLESS! As it opens this is a persistence that develops that hints of the structure under the expansive texture. There is a spectrum of flavors on display highlighted by notes of black cherries, macerated strawberries, plums, tomato leaf, brown spice, coffee beans, tobacco,
La Rioja Alta, founded in 1890 in Haro’s historic Barrio de la Estación, is one of the most esteemed and enduring names in traditional Rioja winemaking. The estate has long been a standard-bearer of classicism, known for its meticulous aging protocols, seamless integration of American oak, and dedication to crafting wines that evolve gracefully over decades. With over 400 hectares of estate-owned vineyards in Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa, La Rioja Alta controls every step of production, from vine to bottle. Their in-house cooperage, where American oak barrels are crafted and seasoned to their exacting standards, is a defining feature of their identity. While they uphold tradition in both vineyard and cellar, the estate continually refines its practices to ensure balance, precision, and purity. Wines like Gran Reserva 890 and 904 have earned iconic status, but the Viña Ardanza Reserva remains a beloved benchmark for value, complexity, and age-worthiness in classic Rioja.
