The Value Super Tuscan Icon That “True Connoisseurs of Sangiovese” Should Take Note – One of the Finest Expression in a Quarter of a Century from “One of the Great Estates in the World.” Best Pricing – 48 Hours Only.
“Fèlsina is one of the great estates in the world. It's as simple as that… I can’t remember the last time I was this excited about Chianti Classico and its wines…” - Antonio Galloni, Vinous
“Made with a special selection of Sangiovese, the 2020 Fontalloro is generous and rich, and the wine sports medium-dark color and concentration. The winemaking team has succeeded in bringing out an especially elegant side to this vintage…” - Monica Larner, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Here is a fun wine that we wanted to share, as it will be featured at our Holiday Grand Tasting featuring more than 50 wines this Thursday, November 21st. With all eyes starting to look toward the new releases of 2021 from Tuscany, we are not done with standouts of the 2020 vintage! For IWM, the best expressions showcase generous fruit with acidity and freshness and the aromatics alone are capable of transporting you to Tuscany in one sip and get you excited about the promise these wines have to offer and are more classic. And with past offerings of Flaccianello and Le Pergole Torte, let alone Tignanello, how can we match these benchmark expressions of Sangiovese from the Tuscan hills? Well, this past week the IWM Team had it, a wine that rightfully belongs in this elite class of these noble interpretations of Sangiovese at a fraction of the price – the 2020 Fontalloro.
We are not alone, Monica Larner, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate noted, “Made with a special selection of Sangiovese, the 2020 Fontalloro is generous and rich, and the wine sports medium-dark color and concentration. The winemaking team has succeeded in bringing out an especially elegant side to this vintage.” She rated the release higher than even the benchmarks of 2019 and 2021, belonging in an elite class that includes 2013, 2015, and 2016. Many more have echoed this sentiment, critics to collectors, and this too is among the finest releases in more than 25 years of reviews. Well, this is another example where we emphatically agree with all the reviews and statements glorifying this wine and vintage. Few wines have captured such attention at this price point. For IWM, the 2020 Fontalloro is another explosive expression from one of the icons of Tuscan winemaking that can be enjoyed by both the ardent connoisseur of Sangiovese and the Burgundy enthusiast, with its elegant, silky tannins, minerality and ample red fruit, while retaining its sense of place and varietal.
Do not miss this opportunity to grab this iconic Tuscan in the making. In true IWM fashion we are including the 2020 Fontalloro with some good company from the Fèlsina stable of wine, and back vintage selections you will want to load up on, as few wines delivers such value and longevity.
FEATURED WINES: Fèlsina Fontalloro and More Tuscan Highlights If you love Italian wine, you know that Fattoria di Fèlsina has long been one of the beloved names in Tuscan wine. It is here in the prized hamlet of Castelnuovo Berardegna, just thirty miles outside of Montalcino, Giuseppe Mazzocolin, Giovanni Poggiali, and longtime winemaker Franco Bernabei produce one of the finest ranges of age-worthy and complex Chianti and Sangiovese bottlings. What makes this estate unique among many of the region’s producers is their dedication to terroir and use of indigenous grape varietals. While many of their neighbors’ blend Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in their Chianti, Fèlsina remains traditionalists to the core. Their Riserva Vigna Rancia is widely regarded as the finest Chianti alongside Fontodi’s Vigna del Sorbo and Castello di Ama’s Bellavista. However, like Fontodi’s Flaccianello, the flagship Fontalloro is one of those monovarietal Super Tuscans that represents the pinnacle of Sangiovese and challenge Brunello di Montalcino – burlier and wilder, whereas the Riserva Rancia is more ethereal and precise.
Additional Notes and Reviews
“….While it is certainly tempting to focus on the flagships, both the Chianti Classico and Chianti Classico Riserva are fabulous choices for readers looking for ageworthy wines that are affordable, something that has always been a strong suit at Fèlsina, where prices remain exceedingly fair. More than anything else, though, Fèlsina represents all the best values of Chianti Classico and its wines.” -Antonio Galloni 2020 FELSINA FONTALLORO CHIANTI CLASSICO Christopher Deas, Italian Wine Merchants: “As we did with the 2019s, we had the more ethereal and precise 2020 Rancia and was absolutely floored – easily one of finest expressions of Sangiovese from this exceptional vintage. But for Fèlsina, it did not end with iconic Chianti Classico Riserva. Once again, the 2020 Fontalloro picks up right where Rancia leaves off, adding more volume in density and immediacy. This is an explosive wine that has benefitted from its additional time in bottle. Expect ripe, succulent red highlighted by black cherries, nuances of red licorice, tobacco, sandalwood, baked earth, tea leaf, crushed flowers, dried herbs and salinity that echo on the back of the palate and linger for a long finish. We find the 2020 Fontalloro has more weight and tannic grip than 2019, and belongs in the family of 2015 and 2016. As always, one of the best favors I can do for someone that loves Italian wine is to emphatically recommend this wine. A whole lot deliciousness now and for years to come. In two words – CLASSIC and PURE.”
Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate: "Made with a special selection of Sangiovese, the 2020 Fontalloro is generous and rich, and the wine sports medium-dark color and concentration. The winemaking team has succeeded in bringing out an especially elegant side to this vintage. The wine offers pronounced notes of cherry and wild plum with delicate spice at the back. Like the other wines in this portfolio, there is a pretty mineral note that makes for a consistent through-line in all these new releases. Drink: 2024-2040..."
Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator: " A vibrant red, with fleeting aromas of lavender and wild rosemary mingling with cherry, orange peel, earth, mineral and tobacco flavors. On the elegant side, despite its youthful power, with excellent harmony, refined tannins and a long, complex aftertaste. Sangiovese. Best from 2026 through 2045..."
Antonio Galloni, Vinous: "The 2020 Fontalloro is a sensual, enveloping wine. Dark red-toned fruit, sweet spice, tobacco, cedar and mint are all beautifully delineated. Fontalloro is a pure Sangiovese from vineyards that straddle the Chianti Classico and Colli Senesi appellations. The duality is very much on display here..." 2020 FELSINA CHIANTI CLASSICO RESERVA RANCIA
Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator: "Intense, with complex flavors of cherry, blackberry, violet, mineral and leafy underbrush, this red is silky and verges on racy. Harmonious and persistent, with a long, resonant aftertaste that echoes red fruit, mineral and savory elements. Best from 2025 through 2045. 4,100 cases made, 1,800 cases imported."
