It is February of a new year, and at IWM that means one thing, the new releases of the 2022 Sassicaia and Ornellaia are approaching and excitement is building And while the Super Tuscan patriarch of Ornellaia may require some patience for the collector, the 2022 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Le Serre Nuove offers approachability, in-the-pocket and on the palate due to its youthful blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cebernet Franc for all levels of enthusiasts.

Yes, there is are the iconic siblings of Valbuena from Vega-Sicilia at $150+ and Les Forts from Latour at $250+, for myself and the IWM team, there is no comparison; the second and third wines of Ornellaia and Sassicaia have no rivals on a price-to-quality ratio department! When you see the second wines of these iconic Bolgheri estates for under $68, you simply jump on them, which is exactly what we did when we were offered an allocation of the 2022 Le Serre Nuove dell’ Ornellaia. 

It is simple – 2022 is shaping up to be a silky and ripe vintage for Bolgheri, offering texture and depth. And like the 2022 Guidalberto for that matter, the Serre Nuove offers a little more flesh and weight when compared to the more restrained 2018, and cooler years of 2019 and 2020. The Tuscan patriarch has simply done everything right, once again, showing off its Mediterranean flare of fruit generosity with its signature touch of underlying salinity and persistence. However, in tasting this wine on several occasions, what IWM found that the bottle now as a little more maturity on it, and with aeration, food, and good company, the wine opens nicely and is ready to impress today. The 2022 Le Serre Nuove remains the perfect steakhouse red. For IWM, it is a taste of the iconic Super Tuscan without the wait and at ¼ of the price for what is one of the greatest values in wine!

Christopher Deas, Italian Wine Merchants: “This is undoubtedly a rich and concentrated expression from the “solar” vintage at this fabled Bolgheri estate. And like the neighboring Tenuta San Guido Guidalberto, the wine offers immediate approachability. More importantly, it is another little Le Serre Nuove that punches well above its weight-class. In fact, for the 2022 release, you once again see a touch of Ornellaia come out in this “baby,” and we believe it is a wine that can easily take on many steakhouse reds that are commanding twice the price. Sure, there is palate coating fruit and tannins here, but with airtime it is followed by underlying persistence and depth. Let this wine breathe and you can expect the signature nuances of ripe black cherry, cassis, wild berries of red and black, black olives, plum, anise, savory dried herbs, pencil shavings, and a taste of the salty sea air. There is a layer of creamy richness, but with some nice mid-palate energy that keeps it in balance - delivered with a touch of royalty and Mediterranean flare that overdelivers. Lots of finesse and focus on the medium-bodied palate with super-fine tannins and a lovely finish. Lively. 65% merlot, 25% cabernet sauvignon and 10% cabernet franc. Why wait on this?"
