As we stated the other week, we are in a Super Tuscan state-of-mind at IWM! It is February of a new year, and at IWM that means one thing, the new releases of the 2022 Sassicaia and Ornellaia are approaching and excitement is building And while the Super Tuscan patriarch of Ornellaia may require some patience for the collector, the 2022 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Le Volte offers unrivalled approachability, in-the-pocket and on the palate due to its youthful blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot for all levels of enthusiasts.

The Tuscan patriarch did everything right, showing off its Mediterranean flare of fruit generosity with its signature touch of salinity and character.  In fact, for Antonio Galloni it was the flagship Ornellaia and Masseto that were the Super Tuscans of the vintage, and as such, Ornellaia SOLD OUT in under a week at IWM.  But the brilliance of the estate, its complex soils and terroir, and the talented winemaking team with Bordeaux pedigree extends through all the wines .  For IWM, Le Volte is one of the most reliable values in the Super-Tuscan class, affording regular access to Bolgheri’s hallowed ground.

Le Volte is the beloved third wine of Ornellaia, and since its inception it has had a rightful place on the IWM shelf. It is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot . And yes, some of the vines that have produced both Ornellaia and Le Serre Nouve, now go into this little overachiever. But what separates Le Volte from its two siblings is its approachability and affordability . We had the Le Volte the other day in IWM’s vintage room with the Ornellaia team and can tell you first-hand – this wine is singing with concentration and energy.

2022 Tenuta dell’Ornellaia Le Volte

It is a product of the warm vintage with its ripe fruit nuances, and you can expect to find ripe wild berries, black cherry, plum, herbs, mocha, tar, and a taste of the salty sea air. I will say in 2022, it is expansive and silky smooth expression, that remains so clean and light on its feet. It finishes dry and with a touch of tannin. Monica Larner, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. In this hot vintage, the Merlot was slightly reduced. The Ornellaia 2022 Le Volte dell'Ornellaia remains a plush and accessible Tuscan red. Harvest time saw lower yields on average, with smaller berries and greater fruit concentration. This wine matures in used oak passed down from the top-shelf wines. There is blackberry and dark cherry with sweet spice.”
