The 2022 Cornas Les Chaillots is a brilliant and expressive Syrah that captures the wild soul of Cornas with uncommon finesse. Sourced from lower-slope vineyards with relatively younger vines—though still up to 40 years old—Les Chaillots offers a slightly more accessible window into Allemand’s style, while retaining the depth and seriousness that defines his wines. The 2022 vintage was warm and generous, yet Allemand’s farming and gentle touch preserved freshness and detail. In the glass, the wine shows a lifted nose of blackberry, black olive, crushed violets, iron, garrigue, and smoked meat. The palate is coiled and vibrant, with fine-grained tannins, lively acidity, and an intense mineral drive rooted in decomposed granite. Thierry Allemand is a cult figure in the Northern Rhône and one of the most revered vignerons in France. A self-taught winemaker who began working in the vineyards of Cornas in the late 1980s, Allemand revived and redefined the appellation through an uncompromising dedication to terroir and natural viticulture. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he eschewed chemical treatments early on, working organically and by hand on Cornas’ steep granite slopes, often on tiny, terraced plots previously abandoned due to their difficulty. His approach in the cellar is equally minimalist—native yeasts, whole-cluster fermentation, long maceration, no fining or filtration, and restrained use of sulfur.
