The 2019 Gianni Brunelli Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a profound and age-worthy Sangiovese crafted only in exceptional vintages, from the estate’s finest fruit. The 2019 season was among the best of the decade in Montalcino—offering a long, even ripening period that yielded fruit of superb balance, concentration, and aromatic purity. The wine undergoes extended maceration and is aged for 36+ months in large Slavonian botti, followed by additional time in bottle before release. In the glass, the 2019 Riserva opens with a deep, resonant nose of black cherry, dried rose petals, sandalwood, leather, iron, and wild herbs, underscored by subtle balsamic notes and crushed rock. The palate is powerful yet composed, with firm, fine-grained tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, vertical finish marked by earth, spice, and a gentle saline lift. There is both gravitas and restraint here—a wine built not to impress immediately, but to reward over time.
Brunelli reclaimed his family’s 2.5-hectare estate, Le Chiuse di Sotto, in 1988, adding 4.5 hectares between 1996 and ’97. This expansion facilitated significant qualitative enhancement, and Gianni’s reclamation continues today with the assistance of renowned consultant Paolo Vagaggini (Il Palazzone, Fuligni, and Poggio Antico). While the Brunello aging regimen is conducted in Slavonian oak, the wines project a rather modern character.
