The 2022 Coteaux Champenois Ambonnay Rouge ‘Cuvée des Grands Côtes’ Vieilles Vignes is a singular and thrilling expression of Pinot Noir from 70+ year-old vines in the Grand Cru village of Ambonnay. Grown on chalk and clay soils, and vinified as a still wine, this cuvée is produced in microscopic quantities and aged in Burgundian-style oak barrels, yielding a wine of exceptional depth, structure, and finesse. The 2022 vintage offers striking clarity and concentration, with aromas of wild raspberry, black cherry, rose petal, crushed chalk, and subtle spice. On the palate, it is taut and focused, with vibrant acidity, fine tannins, and a long, stony finish that reflects the tension and minerality of its terroir. More reminiscent of Chambolle-Musigny or Volnay than of Champagne, this wine bridges two great traditions—Burgundy elegance and Champagne purity. While rare and often snapped up by collectors, this bottling rewards patience, with 10–20 years of aging potential. Serv
Egly-Ouriet is one of Champagne’s most iconic grower-producers, renowned for its powerful, terroir-driven wines from the Montagne de Reims. Based in Ambonnay, a Grand Cru village known for its exceptional Pinot Noir, the estate is led by Francis Egly, a vigneron revered for his low-yield farming, late harvesting, and meticulous cellar practices. All of Egly’s vineyards are farmed organically, with a deep respect for soil health and vine age, and yields are kept deliberately low to emphasize concentration and site expression. While Egly-Ouriet is best known for its richly textured, vinous Champagnes, the estate also crafts a tiny amount of still red wine under the Coteaux Champenois AOC—a rare, collectible category that showcases Pinot Noir from Champagne in its purest, unbubbled form. These bottlings, made from old vines and aged in oak, are among the finest and most age-worthy red wines of the region.
