The 2019 Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello di Montalcino is a refined, polished, and terroir-transparent expression of Sangiovese, blending Gaja’s stylistic finesse with the structured backbone typical of the appellation. The 2019 growing season was marked by a cool spring, followed by a warm, balanced summer and excellent conditions at harvest—resulting in wines of aromatic clarity, freshness, and aging potential. This Brunello is fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged for 24 months in a combination of large Slavonian oak casks and French oak barrels, followed by extended bottle aging. The wine opens with lifted aromas of wild cherry, red currant, rose petal, sweet tobacco, and dried thyme, framed by subtle spice and wet stone. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, with fine, chalky tannins, vibrant acidity, and a poised, mineral finish. While approachable in its youth with decanting, it is structured for longevity.

Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta Description

Pieve Santa Restituta is the Brunello di Montalcino estate of Angelo Gaja, one of Italy’s most visionary and influential winemakers. While Gaja built his legacy in Barbaresco, his acquisition of the historic Pieve Santa Restituta estate in the mid-1990s marked his commitment to expressing Sangiovese Grosso at the highest level in Montalcino. The estate, located in the southwestern subzone of Montalcino near Santo Restituta, combines tradition with modern precision: organic farming, strict fruit selection, and restrained use of oak to respect the varietal’s integrity. The wines are vinified with native yeasts and aged primarily in large casks (botti) with a modest portion of smaller barrels. The Brunello di Montalcino bottling blends fruit from different estate parcels and represents Gaja’s interpretation of balance, structure, and elegance within the Brunello discipline.
