The 2021 Rosso di Montalcino from Le Ragnaie is a beautifully pure and expressive Sangiovese, reflecting the same high standards and traditional approach as the estate’s Brunello. Sourced primarily from younger vines and select high-elevation parcels, the wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in large neutral oak casks for about 12 months. The 2021 vintage was marked by excellent balance—warm days and cool nights—allowing for precise ripeness and lifted aromatics. On the nose, it reveals bright red cherry, wild strawberry, rose petals, thyme, and crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied and vibrant, with fine-grained tannins, fresh acidity, and a mineral-driven, elegant finish. While approachable now, it has the structure to age over the next 5–8 years. Far more serious than most Rossos, this wine offers a compelling glimpse into Le Ragnaie’s style at a more accessible level—ideal with grilled pork, tomato-based pastas, or mushroom risotto.
Le Ragnaie is one of the most respected and terroir-focused producers in Montalcino, celebrated for its elegant, high-altitude expressions of Sangiovese. Founded in 2003 by Riccardo Campinoti, the estate is located near the highest point of the Montalcino appellation—at over 600 meters above sea level—where cooler temperatures and galestro-rich soils produce wines of exceptional finesse, tension, and aromatic clarity. Le Ragnaie farms organically across several distinct zones, including the estate’s high-altitude vineyards, parcels in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, and the warmer Petroso area near the town center. Vinification is traditional: fermentation with native yeasts, long maceration, and aging in large Slavonian oak casks. The wines are known for their purity, transparency of site, and age-worthiness. Le Ragnaie is a standard-bearer for the new wave of Brunello producers favoring elegance over power, and a benchmark for lovers of classic, terroir-driven Tuscan reds.
