Juicy, succulent red and black fruits dance with exotic spices, crushed rose petals, wet river rocks, and a kiss of earth in this supple, beautifully delineated wine. Polished fine-grained tannins sit front and center on the palate of this '12 Clos Saint-Denis, but this wine matches its tannins and its acidity with a silky feel and an intense, layered palate. This wine nearly vibrates with energy, and it has the structure to age for years. Deriving from the estate's east-facing chalky Clos Saint-Denis parcel, the grapes for this wine fermented in 20 to 25% whole clusters, and the wine aged in barriques, only 10% new.
Domaine Michel Magnien is truly a family affair. Bernard Magnien started with just ten acres of vines, and his son Michel, a fourth-generation winemaker, began making wine with them in 1967 when he was just 21. Over the next few decades, Michel purchased scrubland plots within appellation borders, planted vines, and ended up making world-class wines. Today, this estate, organic since 2008, boasts holdings in Morey-Saint-Denis, Gevrey Chambertin, Chambolle Musigny and Vosne-Romanee, and it rests in the hands of rock star vigneron Frederic Magnien, son of Michel and owner-winemaker of Maison Frederic Magnien. While Michel Magnien's premier and grand cru wines can be pricey, they are transparent, evocative expressions of their various terroirs, as are the village-level bottlings, which make them must-have wines for real Burgheads.
