The 2017 Mastroberardino Taurasi Radici Riserva is a profound and structured rendition of Aglianico, crafted from old vines grown in the clay-limestone and volcanic soils of Montemarano, one of Taurasi’s highest and coolest growing areas. The 2017 vintage was marked by heat and drought, but careful vineyard management preserved balance, yielding a wine of surprising elegance and aromatic lift. Fermented in stainless steel and aged for 30 months in a combination of large Slavonian oak casks and French barriques, followed by extended bottle aging, the wine offers an intense bouquet of black cherry, dried plum, incense, leather, licorice, and a whisper of volcanic ash. On the palate, it is full-bodied and muscular, with dense but refined tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, savory finish marked by notes of graphite, smoke, and bitter herbs. This is a serious cellar wine, approachable with ample decanting now, but built to evolve gracefully over 20–30 years. A perfect match

Mastroberardino Description

Mastroberardino is the historic guardian of Campania’s viticultural heritage and a benchmark producer for Aglianico and Taurasi. Founded in the 1870s and based in Atripalda, the estate played a crucial role in the preservation and revival of Southern Italy’s native grape varieties after phylloxera and two world wars. Under the guidance of Antonio Mastroberardino, and now his son Piero, the winery has remained fiercely committed to tradition while embracing innovation in the vineyard and cellar. Mastroberardino was the first to bottle a single-vineyard Taurasi under the now-iconic label Radici (meaning “roots”) in 1986, a move that helped solidify the wine’s place among Italy’s greatest reds. The estate’s vineyards lie in the hills of Irpinia, at elevations of 400–600 meters, on volcanic soils that contribute to the signature minerality and longevity of its wines.
