As Angelo Gaja, Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, or Paolo Bea have been winemaking pioneers in Italy, so has been ilvaro Palacios in Spain. One of nine children of the owner of Rioja's renowned Palacios Remondo, ilvaro was inspired by French Bordeaux estates like the famed Petrus, and in 1989, he found land for his Priorat winery, which he bought in 1990, when he was just 25 years old; he made history with his estate, crafting world-class wines in an overlooked region. Three years later, Palacios added an old-vine Garnacha vineyard to the estate, and he named it "L'Ermita" after the small chapel on the hill. In 1999, Palacios stumbled upon an abandoned vineyard near Castilla y Leó, and this led to Palacios' second estate, Descendientes de Jose Palacios.
