Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino made its debut in early 2000 with the 1995 vintage.
The Tenuta Pian delle Vigne, 6km south of Montalcino above the Val d'Orcia, was purchased by Antinori in July 1995. It takes its name from a 19th century railway station on the property which is still used today. The estate covers a surface area of 186 hectares, over 60 of which are planted with vineyards, 2h with olive groves ad 124h with woodlands. All 60 hectares of vineyards are planted with Sangiovese at an altitude of 130 meters, mainly south-east facing. The soil is mainly limestone and clay, tending to be quite "poor”, which is a good thing when you’re talking about quality wine cultivation. 31 hectares were planted in 1996 and are currently in full-production while the remaining 33h were planted more recently using five of the Montalcino Sangiovese Grosso clones and the best San Giovese Antinori selections.
