The 2016 Taurasi Vigna Cinque Querce Riserva is a monumental, old-school Aglianico that captures the full potential of the Montemarano terroir. The 2016 vintage was one of the most balanced of the decade, offering cool nights, moderate summer heat, and a long harvest window, which allowed the fruit to reach perfect physiological ripeness while retaining freshness. Grapes from the Cinque Querce vineyard were vinified with a long maceration on the skins, followed by a slow aging process of at least 48 months in large Slavonian oak and extended time in bottle before release. Salvatore Molettieri is one of the great traditionalists of Irpinia, based in Montemarano, a high-altitude subzone of the Taurasi DOCG known for producing the most powerful and long-lived expressions of Aglianico. The estate was founded in the 1980s when Salvatore decided to begin bottling his own wines rather than selling fruit to cooperatives. From the outset, his philosophy has remained rooted in low-yield farming, old vines, extended aging, and deep respect for tradition. His vineyards—particularly the flagship Cinque Querce site—lie at elevations of 500–600 meters, on clay-limestone soils with significant diurnal temperature swings, producing grapes of structure, complexity, and slow, even ripening. The Molettieri family manages every aspect of production, farming organically and harvesting by hand. In the cellar, Salvatore remains firmly committed to classical winemaking: long macerations, aging in large Slavonian oak casks and older barriques, and delayed release s
