The 2020 Sandrone Barolo Aleste is a radiant and structured expression of Cannubi Boschis, one of the most storied vineyards in Barolo. Renamed “Aleste†in honor of Luciano’s grandchildren Alessia and Stefano, this wine comes from a prized parcel in Barolo village, situated on calcareous and sandy soils that lend both aromatic lift and textural elegance. The 2020 vintage brought a warm but balanced growing season, resulting in wines with fine tannins, deep fruit, and vibrant energy. Aleste is vinified with native yeasts, undergoes a long maceration, and is aged for 24 months in large French oak botti, followed by extended bottle aging. The wine opens with a compelling bouquet of wild cherry, raspberry liqueur, rose petal, mint, anise, and crushed stone, all tightly woven and vividly expressive. On the palate, it is full-bodied and polished, with firm yet integrated tannins, a layered core of ripe red fruit, and a long, mineral-driven finish that echoes with spice and eart
Luciano Sandrone is often labeled a modernist because he opts for shorter macerations, the use of some new oak, and shorter aging requirements for his wines. However, that is only half the equation. Here, the craftsman respects tradition and only incorporates aspects of modern technology and technique to showcase the utmost potential of his precious grapes. His magical juice does not rely on 225-liter barriques for style (he prefers the 500-liter French oak barrels). Luciano’s training comes from a traditional background at the historic Marchesi di Barolo estate. It is here that he earned and saved enough to purchase his own tiny estate. Now his boutique-style winery with choice plot locations produces some of the richest, most polished Barolos in the region.
