Intense red, blue, and black fruits dance against a backdrop of warm earth, violet petals, baking spices, licorice and Mediterranean scrub in this very appealing, plush wine. Fine-grained tannins and a sweet inner perfume find their complements in bright acidity and savory underpinnings in this highly enjoyable, anytime red. This mono-varietal Primitivo is grown with sustainable practices and harvested by hand; grapes ferment for about ten days in temperature-controlled stainless steel, and the wine ages for five months in steel, followed by one month in bottle.
In the sun-drenched countryside of Francavilla Fontana, or the "Land of the Imperials,"sits the Schiena Vini estate. In 1993, Giuseppe Schiena purchased almost 75 acres in Trulli, Puglia, with the purpose of founding his own estate. Giuseppe came from a family of winegrowers, and this land in the center of Puglia struck him as having the ideal ingredients for making terrific wine: a lot of sun, lime-rich soils, and cool, crystalline nights. Now almost three decades later, Shiena Vini grows both indigenous Puglian grapes, like Negramaro and Primitivo, as well as international grapes like Chardonnay, and the estate crafts three lines of pure, terroir-driven Puglian wines: Innovation, whose easy-going palates appeal to a broad-base of wine drinkers; Tradition, which aim to capture the history and spirit of Puglian wine; and Selection, wines made specifically for connoisseurs.
