The 2022 Etna Rosso “Anniversario†Calderara Sottana is a rare, old-vine selection from Terre Nere’s oldest parcels within the Calderara Sottana cru, featuring vines that are over 100 years old and ungrafted, planted on deeply stony, volcanic soils rich in pumice and ash. The “Anniversario†label marks a celebratory and limited-edition expression—produced only in exceptional vintages and representing the purest, most focused voice of this storied site. The 2022 vintage, shaped by a warm growing season balanced by high-altitude coolness, gave fruit of excellent ripeness, freshness, and phenolic precision. Fermentation was spontaneous, and the wine was aged in neutral French oak tonneaux for just over a year, preserving both aromatic purity and mineral transparency. The result is a wine of poise, depth, and volcanic identity. Aromas unfold with red currant, wild strawberry, blood orange peel, rose petals, and crushed rock, underpinned by savory hints of iron, smoke, and mou
Tenuta delle Terre Nere is one of the defining estates on Mount Etna, and a pioneer in elevating the region to international acclaim. Founded in the early 2000s by Marco de Grazia, the estate is located on the northern slopes of the volcano, where high elevations (600–1,000 meters), dramatic diurnal shifts, and black volcanic soils create a singular environment for fine wine production. The estate is widely credited with introducing a Burgundian philosophy to Etna—treating each contrada (cru) as a distinct expression of terroir and bottling them separately to showcase their unique identities. The vineyards are farmed organically and manually, many of them planted with centenarian, pre-phylloxera bush vines, particularly in historic sites like Calderara Sottana. Winemaking is minimal and respectful: native yeast fermentations, gentle extractions, and aging in neutral oak barrels and tonneaux, designed to highlight the voice of the land rather than cellar technique.
