The 1998 Terreno Chianti Classico Riserva is a fully mature, classically structured expression of Sangiovese that now shows the tertiary depth and rustic elegance only time can bring. The 1998 vintage in Tuscany was warm and relatively generous, yielding wines of balanced ripeness and moderate acidity—wines built to evolve rather than dominate. After over 25 years in bottle, this Riserva reveals a captivating bouquet of dried cherry, fig, leather, sweet tobacco, balsamic herbs, and earthy undergrowth, with whispers of cedar and potpourri. The palate is medium-bodied, with softened tannins, mellow acidity, and a savory finish carried by dried fruit, spice, and forest floor notes. The wine has retained its core structure, but the fruit has gracefully faded into an elegant, umami-driven profile. It should be decanted gently to remove sediment and allowed to breathe.
Terreno is a historic estate located in Greve in Chianti, at the heart of the Chianti Classico region. Owned by the Swedish Ruffato family since the 1980s, the winery has consistently upheld a philosophy of organic farming, authenticity, and traditional Tuscan expression. The estate’s vineyards, set on classic galestro and alberese soils at altitudes between 300–450 meters, are planted predominantly to Sangiovese, with small amounts of traditional local varieties. Terreno’s style favors elegance over power, with minimal intervention in the cellar and a strong respect for the typicity of the region. Their Riserva bottlings are only made in the best vintages, and are aged longer—usually in large oak casks—to deliver depth, structure, and aging potential.
