The 2019 Irancy Bourgogne Rouge from Domaine Richoux is a vibrant, terroir-driven expression of cool-climate Pinot Noir, offering surprising depth and finesse from a lesser-known corner of Burgundy. The 2019 vintage provided excellent ripeness while retaining freshness, and Richoux capitalized on the season with his characteristically long aging process—typically 18 to 24 months in old oak foudres. The wine opens with lifted aromas of red currant, wild strawberry, rose petals, damp earth, and subtle spice. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and finely textured, with bright acidity, soft but structured tannins, and a mineral-laced, savory finish. There’s a quiet power beneath the wine’s elegance, making it both immediately appealing and capable of short- to mid-term aging. This Irancy is a beautiful alternative to more expensive Côte d’Or reds, offering Burgundian typicity with its own distinctive, limestone-driven character—perfect with roast chicken, charcuterie, or eart

Thierry Richoux Irancy Description

Domaine Richoux, located in the village of Irancy in northern Burgundy’s Yonne department, is a hidden gem in the world of traditional Pinot Noir. Run by Thierry Richoux, and now increasingly by his son Gabin, the estate is known for its commitment to organic farming (certified since 2005), late harvesting, and long élevage, producing wines of depth, freshness, and authenticity. Irancy lies just southwest of Chablis, and its cooler climate, combined with Kimmeridgian limestone and marl soils, gives a unique, high-toned expression of Pinot Noir—often with an optional addition of César, a rare ancient grape native to the area. Richoux avoids overt extraction or heavy oak, favoring long fermentation with native yeasts and aging in large old foudres, allowing the wines to develop texture and aromatic complexity while retaining their tension and purity. Domaine Richoux has become a reference point for the Irancy appellation, admired by sommeliers and Burgundy purists alike.
